Our Journey to the San Rafael Swell

By Oliver Kelly

Where the Pavement Ends

There’s a moment on every trip when the pavement ends and the real adventure begins. For us, it came in the middle of the Nevada desert: soaking in a lonely hot spring at dusk, with our Tiny Planet parked on the horizon and nothing but sagebrush and mountains in every direction. That was just the drive out. Our destination: Utah’s San Rafael Swell.

Chasing the Same Horizon

We joined a caravan of fellow overlanders for this one — a rolling parade of Sprinters and Expedition rigs snaking along dirt roads beneath towering sandstone cliffs. There’s something special about watching a dozen dust trails rise behind you in the mirror, knowing every one of them is chasing the same horizon. Each night, we’d circle up on a mesa or canyon rim, swap stories, and watch the desert change colors.

The Van Never Flinched

The Swell itself is hard to put into words. Massive rock spires standing guard over empty valleys. Slickrock domes stacked like layer cakes. Roads that demanded everything from our Tiny Planet.
At one point, I snapped a photo of our tire perched on a boulder, the underside of the van framing red rock cliffs in the distance. The van never flinched. Watching it crawl through terrain we once would have turned around at is half the fun of owning it.

The Quiet Moments

But the moments that stick with me are the quiet ones: sleeping with the rear doors open and awakening in the morning to a canyon view most hotels couldn’t dream of charging for; lying on the roof deck at golden hour, shoes off, watching the sun set fire to the cliffs; and spotting blooming prickly pear and succulents pushing up through the cracked desert floor.
One afternoon, we even hiked out to an active dinosaur dig, where 150-million-year-old bones sat half-excavated in the dirt — a reminder of just how old and strange this landscape really is.

Above the Badlands

The grand finale was camping above the badlands near Factory Butte. At sunset, the gray moonscape below rippled like frozen waves. After dark, with zero light pollution, the Milky Way poured across the sky so brightly it didn’t feel real.
We woke early and watched the sun break over the desert from the edge of the rim, coffee in hand, completely alone. That single morning justified the entire trip.

Why We Chose Van Travel

People ask what inspired us to choose van travel. It’s this: waking up somewhere unreasonable and beautiful, with everything you need within arm’s reach and no schedule but the sun’s. Our Tiny Planet van isn’t just how we get to these places — it’s what makes staying in them possible.

The Swell was unforgettable. We’re already planning the next one.
